We’re Out of Room. Everywhere.

We’re Out of Room. Everywhere.

This week, our shelter reached a heartbreaking milestone: we’re now completely at capacity.

We’re not just over capacity for large dogs anymore.

We’re over capacity across the board:

  • Large dogs

  • Adult cats

  • Kittens in our nursery

We’ve run out of kennels. We’ve run out of cages. And this week we had to house adult cats in temporary pop-up crates — a setup that is not humane long-term and not what any animal deserves.

How Did This Happen?

Just this week alone:

  • We took in two cat hoarding cases, bringing in dozens of cats at once.

  • Our kitten nursery surged toward critical capacity.

  • Our large dog population continued to exceed safe limits.

This isn’t just a bad day or even a bad week — it’s a crisis we can no longer manage alone.

The Hidden Cost of “Making Space”

When shelters exceed capacity, animals suffer in ways that aren’t always visible.

For dogs, it means:

  • Escalating stress and anxiety

  • Deteriorating behavior from lack of stimulation

  • Risk of illness and injury

  • Decline in adoptability

For cats, it means:

  • Litter box avoidance due to stress

  • Fear-based aggression or withdrawal

  • Depression and refusal to eat

  • Undetected illness in overcrowded conditions

Many of these animals were healthy and thriving when they arrived. But when we’re forced to warehouse them in overcrowded, overstimulating environments, their mental and physical health quickly declines.

When the Shelter Is No Longer a Safe Place

Eventually, the emotional and behavioral deterioration reaches a point where keeping an animal in the shelter becomes inhumane — and euthanasia may be considered simply because there’s nowhere left to house them safely.

We never want to get to that point.

But we’re there.

What You Can Do

We urgently need fosters, adopters, and shares for all animals, but especially for:

  • Large dogs

  • Adult cats

Even helping just one animal can change the outcome for many.

Please help. We don’t want space to be the reason an animal loses their life.
