Life at the Shelter
The safety and well-being of the pets in our care at the animal shelter is our number one priority. The Animal Foundation has programs that address both their physical and mental health needs.
No matter how well run or humane the environment, animal shelters can be stressful, scary places for lost, abandoned, and homeless pets. They find themselves in an unfamiliar, noisy environment with unfamiliar smells, people, and other animals. Our goal is to care for all of the animals that come to us in need to the best of our ability.
The Academy for Canine Etiquette (ACE)
Our ACE program is designed to help shelter dogs prepare for a brighter future by equipping them with essential skills and enriching their lives.

Learn MoreShelter Pet Vet Care
The animal shelter environment is unique in the veterinary care field, requiring different skills than private clinics. In addition to our public Low-Cost Vet Clinic, The Animal Foundation runs one of the most successful high-volume veterinary care operations for shelter pets in the nation.
Learn MoreThe Five Freedoms
The Animal Foundation is guided by a baseline set of internationally recognized animal welfare standards called The Five Freedoms:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor.
- Freedom from Discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to Express Normal Behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
- Freedom from Fear and Distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
