The Academy for Canine Etiquette (ACE)

We believe every dog deserves the opportunity to shine. Our ACE (Academy for Canine Etiquette) program is designed to help shelter dogs prepare for a brighter future by equipping them with essential skills and enriching their lives.

The ACE program is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by dogs who may be struggling to adapt to the shelter environment. Our comprehensive approach not only helps these dogs become better candidates for adoption but also enhances their overall mental well-being.

What they learn:

  • Basic Commands: We teach essential commands such as "Sit," "Down," and "Stay." These fundamental skills are crucial for good behavior and communication between dogs and their future families.
  • Recall Skills: Training dogs to respond reliably to "Come" ensures that they can safely and confidently return to their owners, making them more manageable and enjoyable companions.
  • Leash Manners: We work on loose-leash walking techniques, helping dogs learn to walk calmly and obediently by their owners' sides. Once dogs have mastered loose-leash walking, they move on to learning the "heel" command.
  • Advanced Behaviors: Beyond the basics, we also introduce more advanced behaviors like door and kennel routines. Dogs that learn all advanced behaviors can graduate and receive the title "Certified Good Boy or Girl!"

How it Works:

TheAnimalFoundation-LR-3299.jpgEvery dog enrolled in the ACE program is paired with a dedicated staff member or volunteer who becomes their personal trainer and advocate. These committed individuals bring the dogs to group training sessions once a week, where they benefit from socialization and structured learning in a supportive environment.

In addition to group sessions, each dog receives individualized attention through weekly one-on-one training. This personalized approach allows us to address each dog’s unique needs and challenges, providing them with the best possible preparation for their future homes.

Why It Matters:

Larger dogs and bully breeds often face longer stays in shelters compared to smaller breeds, due to a variety of factors and misconceptions. These breeds can be overlooked by potential adopters, making it crucial to enhance their appeal through socialization and training.

The ACE program plays a vital role in improving the adoption prospects for these dogs. By helping them develop strong social skills and "good citizenship" behaviors, we increase their chances of finding loving homes and ensure they are well-prepared for a successful transition into family life.

The Certified Good Girls and Boys Program

The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen program is celebrated worldwide for promoting responsible dog ownership and cultivating good manners in our furry friends. It's a set of ten skills that showcase a dog's social and behavioral abilities, reflecting their readiness to be well-behaved members of a family and the community.

However, for shelter dogs, a roadblock often arises when it comes to taking the CGC test: the requirement for an owner's participation. This leaves many wonderful shelter dogs unable to demonstrate their potential!

This led us to develop the Certified Good Girls and Boys Program, a modified version of the CGC test tailored to the shelter environment. The program evaluates dogs based on their individual merits, enabling them to showcase their skills and qualities even without a permanent owner. Dogs who pass this test receive the elite shelter title "Certified Good Boy/Girl!"
