Free Microchip December
November 30, 2023 - December 27, 2023 | 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
The Animal Foundation has teamed up with the city of Las Vegas to offer free microchips to pet owners during the month of December.
Most stray pets who end up at The Animal Foundation have homes and families who love them, but only about 50 percent of stray dogs and cats who came to the shelter are microchipped. This prevents the shelter from helping many animals reunite with their families.
In fact, stray pets in our shelter are 82% more likely to be returned to their owners if they have an up-to-date microchip, compared to those without. Studies have shown that one out of every three pets will become lost during their lifetime. Unlike a collar and tags that can easily fall off, microchips are a permanent and reliable method of identification for a pet.
Starting Aug. 1, 2024, all dogs and cats over the age of four months residing in the City of Las Vegas must have a microchip. The city ordinance was implemented by Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear.
Microchips are cheap, easy to implant, and can last a lifetime! A microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is injected beneath the surface of a pet's skin between the shoulder blades to provide a permanent form of identification. The process is similar to a routine shot, taking only a few seconds, and no anesthetic is required.
A lost pet can be scanned for a microchip at most veterinarians and pet supply stores. The data on the chip links the pet to the manufacturer’s database where the owner's contact information is stored and updated.
Each pet in a household needs a separate appointment. 500 microchips are available while supplies last. This promotion, in partnership with Councilman Crear, was made possible by an anonymous donor.
You can make an appointment HERE. Appointments will become available on Friday, December 1, 2023. Our clinic is located at 655 N. Mojave Rd. in Las Vegas. The clinic entrance is closest to Mojave Rd.
