BARKLEY

Hi, my name is BARKLEY

I'm currently relaxing in foster care, and loving it!!

'After picking him up from the Animal Foundation on February 5th, we found Barkley (then named Knight) to be a very friendly and was craving attention. Immediately after putting him in the car we found that he loves to ride in the car and is a good very good traveler.

Once home Barkley wanted to play with our other three dogs, in fact throughout the time we have had him we have found that he loves other dogs and always wants to greet and play with them. We had purchased a second kennel prior to his arrival and started crate training the first night, which he did not like as the crate was in another room. We moved his crate into the room with our Golden Doodle’s crate and that seemed to help. We worked on the crate training by feeding the two dogs in their crates to make him more comfortable in the kennel. Now Barkley goes willingly into the crate at night without a problem.

We found that Barkley had not been taught to walk on a leash, he would pull and would have to leave his mark on everything. We purchased a “Gentle Leader” harness that went over the dogs head to control his instinct to pull. We have now gone back to leash on his collar with a short leash and he is not pulling and is
getting where he walks in a heel or close to a heel. The short leash also helps control him so he cannot go to every bush or tree to mark. (As a side note, we use a short leash on Barkley and our Doodle to help avoid tripping over a longer leash.)

Barkley has been taught to sit on command fairly well and we are working on stay. Barkley is fully house trained and has learned to use the doggy door. Although we renamed him Barkley, he rarely barks. Barkley and our Doodle love to play, they roughhouse off and on all day with extended periods of Barkley sleeping on the couch or our bed, he is a real “couch potato”. He does try to play with our two miniature dachshunds but is a little too large and powerful, but they get along great together otherwise. We are unsure how he would deal with other animals such as cats.

We are working with Barkley's separation anxiety and are making strides! He figured out how to grab things through his kennel and once that was solved, he is being more calm while in his kennel.

Barkley showed a tendency to counter surf when he arrived, but we have been working with him to correct this behavior as well. We have come to enjoy Barkley, he is very loving, but he does need a home that will provide firm but gentle discipline and continued training, He would be best in a home that has another similar sized dog that he can play with or trips to a good day care or dog park for him to burn off his excess energy.'
