From “Heart” to Obi: A Long-Term Shelter Dog’s Happy Ending
When Heart first came to The Animal Foundation, he was the kind of dog who tugged at everyone’s emotions. A gentle, goofy American Bully mix, he was also a long-time resident who had been adopted and returned more than once. Life in a kennel was wearing on him. Staff adored him, but Heart was still waiting for the one person who would finally see him for who he truly was.
In January 2023, his story was featured on FOX5 Las Vegas. That’s when Caroline saw him—and everything changed.
Caroline instantly knew Heart was her dog. She adopted him, renamed him Obi (which means “heart” in Nigerian), and gave him the fresh start he had been waiting so long for.
A New Life Full of Love
When Obi went home, he was just 10 months old. Today, at 2 years old and weighing in at 105 pounds, he has blossomed into a confident, healthy, and endlessly entertaining companion.
“Obi loves to get his 10,000 steps in each day, followed by four-hour naps and two hours of sunbathing,” Caroline told us. “He’s healthy, happy, and absolutely the love of my life.”
Obi has even graduated from multiple training classes with our friends at Pawtastic Friends—including an Intro to Agility course. He may be big, but he’s quick on his paws!

A Bond Like No Other
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Obi’s story is his friendship with Ryan, Caroline’s best friend who uses a wheelchair. Despite his size and strength, Obi instinctively adjusts his play, energy, and attitude whenever he’s with Ryan. The two are inseparable—and a joy to watch together.
“He’s the #1 companion to his BFF, Ryan,” Caroline shared. “They’re a hoot together!”
The Ending We Dream Of
For our staff and volunteers who knew Heart during his long stay, stories like Obi’s are what we hope for every single animal who comes through our doors. From a struggling shelter dog to a beloved family member, Obi’s transformation is a reminder of the difference adoption makes—not just for the animal, but for the people lucky enough to love them.
As Caroline says:
“One of these days, Obi will probably want a foster sibling…to be continued!”
