Chappo is One of the Most Emaciated Dogs The Animal Foundation has Ever Seen

Chappo when he first arrived at the shelter

Chappo has been living a nightmare.

When he arrived at The Animal Foundation, he weighed just 21 pounds, less than half of what a healthy dog his size should weigh.

You can see his ribs, spine, and hip bones. His ears have hair loss, and he has muscle wasting and sores on his hips.

He is emaciated with the lowest possible body condition score, a 1 out of 9. When he arrived, he was so weak, he couldn’t even lift himself onto the bed in his kennel.

Despite it all, this sweet boy just wants love when our staff goes up to him. He’s got the most adorable puppy eyes, and he leans in for gentle pets, craving nothing but love.

Our wonderful veterinary team started Chappo on a strict refeeding plan to help him safely gain weight. He has to be monitored carefully.

And already, Chappo has made progress! He’s gained 7 pounds and his tail is finally wagging for the very first time. He’s moving around more, and everyone has fallen in love with him.

But Chappo’s journey to recovery is far from over.

His bloodwork came back abnormal because of severe malnutrition. He’ll need ongoing medical care, follow-up testing, x-rays, and a strict diet to make a full recovery.

We don’t know what happened to Chappo before he arrived at the shelter, but Animal Protection Services is investigating.

We’re committed to giving Chappo the second chance he deserves, but we can’t do it without you.

Your donation will help cover his continued care, medical rechecks, and every meal that helps him grow stronger.

Please, help Chappo heal and show him the love he’s been missing for far too long.

Every dollar counts. And right now, thanks to two generous donors, Brian and Molly Curland, your gift will be matched up to $1,500 to help Chappo heal. That means your donation goes twice as far.

Update: October 30, 2025

Our beautiful angel boy is up 12 pounds!

Chappo is moving around more, has a little twinkle in his eye, and continues to be the sweetest boy ever.

He’s even handing out kisses to staff, and we can’t tell you how much joy that brings us.

Thank you to everyone who donated to Chappo’s care. Your generous donations will help us continue to give him the medical care, follow-up testing, x-rays, and special diet he needs to make a full recovery.

A special thanks to Brian and Molly Curland, whose generous match of $1,500 helped support Chappo’s healing journey.

Chappo will have another weight check later this week, and we can’t wait to keep watching his progress.

When Chappo arrived at The Animal Foundation, he weighed just 21 pounds, less than half of what a healthy dog his size should weigh. You can see his ribs, spine, and hips.

Now, Chappo is finally on the road to recovery.

Update: December 16, 2025

Drumroll please…. Chappo has been adopted!

This sweet boy arrived at the shelter on the brink of death. Today, he’s thriving.

Chappo’s new family renamed him Gumbo, and honestly…it fits.

He’s playful, smart, energetic, and living his absolute best life. We couldn’t be happier.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, or supported his journey. You helped save his life.
