The Animal Foundation Receives $75,000 from PetSmart Charities® To Support the ‘Keeping Every Person and Pet Together’ (KEPPT) Program

Grant will fund program that keeps people and pets together in times of hardship

Las VegasThe Animal Foundation received a grant for $75,000 from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, to keep pets at home and out of the shelter by providing funding for external veterinary medical services and behavior training services as part of its Keeping Every Person and Pet Together (KEPPT) program. Medical services and behavior training are among the greatest needs for KEPPT patrons who face real barriers that threaten their pet ownership. Thanks to this generous grant, The Animal Foundation will be able to channel more medical and behavior training resources to assist people who qualify for such temporary help with their pets.

“When faced with the inability to properly address their pet’s health or behavior issues, many people are forced to consider surrender,” said Daniel Neel, Chief Finance and Development Officer for The Animal Foundation. “Through our KEPPT program, we can provide much-needed assistance to these pet owners, whether that be in the form of short-term work with an animal behavior trainer, sterilization surgery, vaccines, medications or assistance to pay for medical procedures.”

The Animal Foundation launched KEPPT as a pilot program in September 2015 to serve as the shelter’s owner-surrender intervention strategy. Since its launch, KEPPT has successfully kept an average of 100 at-risk pets at home and out of the shelter every month. With the addition of the $75,000 PetSmart Charities grant, The Animal Foundation aims to reduce over-the-counter owner surrenders by as much as 30% over the next year to achieve significant cost savings that will help to sustain KEPPT as a vital program for the community.

“We are thrilled to lend our support to the KEPPT program, which will make affordable specialized pet care services more accessible to the community,” said Jenny Aho, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities.  “Together with The Animal Foundation, we hope to dramatically reduce the number of owner surrenders in the Las Vegas Valley and find more solutions so that pets can stay with their owners and avoid entering the shelter.”

Operating as the Nevada’s largest open-admission animal shelter, The Animal Foundation provides refuge and healthcare for thousands of helpless animals annually. The Animal Foundation is open daily from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. For more information and to view adoptable pets, please visit
