Shelter’s new Underdog Adoption Program highlights dogs in need, offers incentives to adopters who take home qualifying dogs

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — February 26, 2015 — The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest open-admission animal shelter, announced today that has partnered with The PEDIGREE Foundation for The Animal Foundation’s Underdog Adoption Program, a project designed to highlight dogs having a harder time getting adopted in an effort to find them forever homes.

“While some dogs get adopted very easily, others have a harder time finding the right family,” said Andy Bischel, director of development for The Animal Foundation. “The goal of this program is to highlight the amazing qualities of these harder to place dogs to help them find homes, and to provide their new owners with the resources they need to successfully integrate this new pet into their home and family.”

“The PEDIGREE Foundation is very grateful to The Animal Foundation for this exciting program that will place more dogs in loving homes,” added Julie Duke, executive director for The PEDIGREE Foundation. “ We feel privileged to support the Underdog Program and look forward to hearing how it not only saves more dogs’ lives, but also makes it possible for more people to experience the joys of canine companionship.”

Dogs may qualify for the Underdog Adoption Program for a variety of reasons. The program takes into consideration factors including age, temperament, and the amount of time a dog has been waiting for a forever home, among others.

To provide each adopters with resources and tools for responsible pet ownership, each qualifying Underdog will receive:

  • $50 off their adoption fee
  • Free collar, leash, and custom ID tag
  • Free vaccines for the life of the pet
  • Discounted training at participating facilities
  • Spay/neuter surgery, up-to-date vaccines, a microchip, and more

Dogs qualifying for the Underdog program will have special signage on their kennels to note them as program participants at both of The Animal Foundation’s adoption locations:

The Animal Foundation’s Campus Adoption Center
655 N. Mojave Road, Las Vegas
Open Daily, 11am–7pm

PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center
286 W. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson
Open Daily, 9am–8pm (closing 7pm on Sundays)

The program’s goal is to place 400 Underdogs into new homes by the end of the year.
